Christmas In New York
With glittering decorations and fab shopping, the Big Apple at Christmas is truly special! Here are some highlights to plan into your trip…
Just like Buddy in Elf, you experience the true magic of New York City at Christmas time. From the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and ice rink to the glittering lights of Fifth Avenue, the Big Apple has so much to offer.
The Rockefeller Center
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree has become synonymous with New York at Christmas time. Standing at 69-100 feet (depending on the tree selected), this Norway spruce is covered in glowing lights to bring some festive cheer to this bustling city.
Below this bedazzled tree is The Rink at Rockefeller Center. Put your skates on and glide around this iconic venue. Skating is a great way to see the tree in all its splendour as well as getting up close and personal to the golden Prometheus statue.
Empire State Building
To see New York City in all its glory it’s best to see it from above. The iconic Empire State Building has 360° views of the city where you’ll be able to spot all of its landmarks including New York’s most famous park. A night time visit will bring a different perspective, capture glittering lights and skyline. It’s probably best to wait until 10pm if you want time to enjoy the view without the crowds, with the attraction open until 2am (check opening times before visiting).
Central Park
Central Park is a sight to behold in the colder months and what better way to explore this winter wonderland than by horse and cart? Experience the true romance of the Big Apple aboard this traditional transportation and be mesmerised by the wintry views surrounding you.
If you’d prefer to stroll yourself, take a walk around to the Central Park Zoo to listen to the Delacorte Clock which plays Christmas music every half an hour. Venture inside the zoo to be greeted by snow leopards, sea lions and penguins.
In the centre of Central Park, surrounded by trees and hidden away from the busy streets of NYC is Belvedere Castle, a Gothic masterpiece built in the 19th century. This folly is even more stunning with a light dusting of snow so remember your camera!
Radio City Music Hall
Huddle indoors away from the frost for the Christmas Spectacular Starring The Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall for a festive extravaganza! Since 1933 The Rockettes have been delighting New Yorkers at Christmas with their musical show featuring nothing but festive music. Another Christmas staple is The Nutcracker performed by the New York City Ballet, or for something a bit different the Cirque de Soleil show ’Twas the Night Before… for an acrobatic spectacle. Nobody does Christmas quite like New York City!
Merry Markets
The Union Square Holiday Market in the heart of New York City has over 160 stalls selling handmade crafts, art and delicious food. Weave in around the candy cane striped vendors under the twinkling lights of the New York skyline.
While you’re in Central Park, sip on some hot mulled wine at the Columbus Circle Holiday Market or visit the Grand Central Holiday Fair in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central for an indoor treat. Both markets are full of unique goods that would make the perfect Christmas present.
Skating In New York
There are ice rinks aplenty during the winter months in New York so you won’t be hard pressed to find one to glide on.
Skate amid the New York skyline on the 23rd floor atop The William Vale hotel for some spectacular views or head to The Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park. Unlike other rinks in the city this one is free so if you’re looking for an inexpensive day out, this is where to go. After you’ve skated around, warm up at The Lodge nearby and sip on some delicious hot cocoa or a festive cocktail, the choice is yours!
Shopping
You can’t visit NYC without a stroll along Fifth Avenue, the most famous shopping street in the world. Marvel at the jewellery in Tiffany’s and top designer stores like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. Or if you just fancy a bit of window shopping the Christmas displays in Sak’s Fifth Avenue are a holiday tradition that entice visitors across the world to its front door.
Fifth Avenue isn’t the only place for a spot of shopping. If you’re in need of entertaining the young ones, FAO Schwarz toy centre in the Rockefeller Center will do just the trick. Book lovers should venture in to the Strand Bookstore. With over 2.5 million books to choose from you won’t struggle to find the perfect Christmas read.
And for a Miracle on 34th Street, Macy’s flagship store will make all your Christmas dreams come true. From its dazzling interior to its sparkling exterior this will bring delight to both old and young.
