These cute little bags are ideal for wrapping up stocking fillers and other smaller gifts. They are so full of character and make a perfect family keepsake to be treasured and reused for years to come.

MEASUREMENTS AND SIZES:

Each bag measures 11 cm x 15cm

YOU WILL NEED:

  • Yarn: Sirdar Snuggly DK, shades (A) 483 Whizz/252 Lemon/216 Sky, (B) 242 Flamenco, (C) 344 Oatmeal, (D) 501 Bramble, (E) 423 Honey, (F) 490 Aqua, a small amount of each; (G) Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK in shade 963 Biscuit; (H) Sirdar Snuggly Snowflake DK
  • Needles: 3mm
  • Crochet hook: 3mm
  • Tapestry needle
  • Toy safety stuffing
  • Toy safety eyes: black, 6mm, three pairs
  • Pom pom: white, 1cm

TENSION SQUARE:

  • 26 sts x 32 rows
  • 10cm x 10cm
  • Stocking Stitch
  • 3mm needles

TO MAKE BASIC BAG:

Using 3mm needles and yarn A, cast on 32 sts

Rows 1-2: k

Rows 3-55: starting with a k (RS) row, work in st st

Row 56 (WS folding edge): k

Rows 57-109: starting with a k row, work in st st

Rows 110-111: k

Cast off kwise

To make string for bag: Using a 3mm crochet hook and yarn B or E, make 100ch

Fasten off.

SANTA FACE:

Row 1 (WS): p

Row 2: (kfb) to end. 20 sts

Rows 3-25: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 26: (k2tog) to end.

Ten sts

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight and fasten off

SANTA HAT:

Using 3mm needles and yarn H, cast on 20 sts

Rows 1-3: k

Cut yarn H and join yarn B

Rows 4-11: starting with a k row, work in st st

Row 12: (k3, k2tog) four times. 16 sts

Rows 13-15: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 16: (k2, k2tog) to end.

12 sts

Row 17: p

Row 18: (k2, k2tog) to end.

Nine sts

Rows 19-25: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 26: (k1, k2tog) to end.

Six sts

Rows 27-29: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 30: (k2tog) to end.

Three sts

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight
and fasten off.

SANTA BEARD:

Using 3mm needles and yarn H, cast on 20 sts

Rows 1-3: k

Row 4: skpo, k to last two sts, k2tog. 18 sts

Row 5: p2tog, p to last two sts, p2tog. 16 sts

Rows 6-11: rep Rows 4-5 three times. Four sts

Cast off

Santa’s NOSE:

Using 3mm needles and yarn G, cast on eight sts

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight and fasten off

Stitch ends together to make shape into a bobble

TO MAKE UP SANTA BAG:

Sew side seams of bag using mattress stitch. With fastened-off yarn end of Head, sew seam just 1cm from knitted finish. Sew one edge of Head to bag and stuff Head lightly. Attach Beard. Sew one side edge of Hat to bag and attach a pom pom, then attach Nose and safety eyes to Head. Sew the other side of head and hat to bag. Thread string into bag to finish.

Tip from designer Sachiyo Ishii: “If you find it easier to sew the heads to the bags before sewing the bag seams together, feel free to do so – it doesn’t make a difference to the finished project.”

REINDEER FACE:

Reindeer gift bagUsing 3mm needles and yarn C, cast on ten sts

Row 1 (WS): p

Row 2: (kfb) to end. 20 sts

Rows 3-13: starting with a p row, work in st st

Cut yarn C and join yarn E

Rows 14-21: starting with a k row, work in st st

Row 22: (k3, k2tog) to end.

16 sts

Rows 23-25: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 26: (k2, k2tog) to end.

12 sts

Row 27: p

Row 28: (k2, k2tog) to end.

Nine sts

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight and fasten off.

REINDEER EARS (Make Two):

Using 3mm needles and yarn E, cast on five sts

Rows 1-4: starting with a p (WS) row, work in st st

Row 5: p2tog, p1, p2tog.

Three sts

Row 6: sl1, k2tog, pass the first st over the second and fasten off

REINDEER NOSE:

Using 3mm needles and yarn B, cast on ten sts

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight and fasten off

Stitch ends together to make shape into a bobble

ANTLERS Large piece (make two):

Using 3mm needles and yarn D, cast on six sts

Rows 1-10: starting with a p (WS) row, work in st st

Row 11: p2tog, p to end. Five sts

Rows 12-14: starting with a k row, work in st st

Antlers Small piece (make two):

Using 3mm needles and yarn D, cast on five sts

Rows 1-4: starting with a p (WS) row, work in st st

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight and fasten off

TO MAKE UP REINDEER BAG:

Sew side seams of bag using mattress stitch. With fastened-off yarn end of Head, sew seam just 1cm from knitted finish. Sew one edge of Head to bag and stuff Head lightly. Sew Ears and Antlers to bag. Attach Nose and safety eyes to Head. Sew other side of head to bag. Thread string into bag to finish.

Work as for Reindeer, using yarn F

ELF HAT:

Using 3mm needles and yarn F, cast on 20 sts

Rows 1-11: starting with a p (WS) row, work in st st

Row 12: (k3, k2tog) four times. 16 sts

Rows 13-15: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 16: (k2, k2tog) to end.

12 sts

Row 17: p

Row 18: (k2, k2tog) to end.

Nine sts

Rows 19-25: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 26: (k1, k2tog) to end.

Six sts

Rows 27-29: starting with a p row, work in st st

Row 30: (k2tog) to end.

Three sts

Cut yarn leaving a tail, thread through sts, pull tight and fasten off.

ELF COLLAR:

Using 3mm needles and yarn B, cast on 20 sts

Row 1 (WS): p

Row 2: k4, turn. Work on this set of sts only, leave rem sts on LH needle

Row 3: p

Row 4: k1, k2tog, k1. Three sts

Row 5: p

Row 6: skpo, k1. Two sts

Row 7: p2tog. One st

Row 8: kfb. Two sts

Row 9: p

Row 10: kfb, k1. Three sts

Row 11: p

Row 12: k1, kfb, k1. Four sts

Row 13: p

Row 14: k. Leave these sts on RH needle, do not break yarn

Move on to next set of four sts from LH needle

Rep Rows 2-14.

Rep to the end of row

Next row: cast off across the row

TO MAKE UP ELF BAG:

Sew side seams of bag using mattress stitch. With fastened-off yarn end of Head, sew seam just 1cm from the knitted finish. Sew one edge of Head to bag and stuff Head lightly. Sew one side edge of Hat to bag, then attach Nose and safety eyes to Head. Sew other side of head and hat to
bag. Fold Collar piece in half horizontally and sew each side. Attach Collar to neck. Thread string into bag to finish.
