What was Christmas Number 1 in 1983?
The Flying pickets took the UK by storm with their a cappela hit, ‘Only You’ in Christmas 1983.
The song was a cover of Yazoo’s ‘Only You’ hit, the original reaching number 2 in the UK charts.
The Flying Pickets were formed by a group of actors, performing together at John McGrath’s theatre group. The actors included acappella in their stage show, ‘One Big Blow’ in 1981.
Their version of the hit song, topped the charts for a long five weeks in 1983, and they achieved some success around the world.
The song was written by Vince Clark, after he’d left Depeche Mode. Alison Moyet had placed an advertisement in the local paper and the two set upon a brief pop career together. They split in 1093, and Vince went on to form Erasure. Alison set upon a successful solo career.
The two reformed briefly in 2008 to tour and perform together, and Alison performed with Erasure on stage. They revealed they had split because of personality differences and the reunion was a good comfort to them both.
