Experience Christmas In The Highlands Of Scotland
Escape northwards for the full seasonal snow-capped mountains experience!
The Scottish Highlands are the perfect staycation destination. With rugged landscapes, picturesque towns and just the right amount of snow, this is surely the perfect Christmas getaway.
At the heart of the region lies the city of Inverness. As the self-proclaimed Capital of the Highlands, the area has plenty to see and do.
Right in the centre stands Inverness Castle, the present building dating from 1836.
Overlooking the River Ness, it towers over the city providing fantastic views of the area and beyond.
A winter walk along the banks of the river is a must, and a trip to The Snow Goose for a festive meal afterwards is essential! Make sure to bag a table beside the fire – it’ll keep you warm on a cold winter’s day.
Fab Fort William
As the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis is a summit you have to reach. What better way to appreciate the beauty of the Highlands than from 4,413ft? This is a popular mountain and there are numerous well-trodden paths.
Once you’ve conquered the mighty mountain head back down to the Nevis Bank Inn on the banks of the River Nevis. The views from the restaurant are spectacular.
While you’re in the area, do take a trip to the Steall Waterfall, plunging almost 400ft down the hillside. Deep in the glen just outside Fort William, it is a hidden gem worth discovering.
Snowy Glencoe
The Glencoe Valley is full of natural wonders. From An Torr and Signal Rock to the famous Three Sisters, these sites are sure to take your breath away.
For you adrenaline junkies, grab your skis and head to the Glencoe Mountain Resort. Here you can glide down the hills and catch spectacular views of Buachaille Etive Mor.
Never skied before? Not a problem, the resort offers lessons for both children and adults. Or if you want to relive your youth, grab a sledge and race to the bottom instead! glencoemountain.co.uk
Heat yourself up after your exertions in the nearby Glencoe Café where you’ll find yourself surrounded by delicious home bakes. The café is a local favourite so be sure to give it a try.
Mountains aren’t the only attraction in the Highlands. Why not rent a kayak for the day and revel in Loch Leven’s open waters? Remember to wrap up warmly as the area is pretty chilly all year round!
A loch with a secret
Just south of Inverness you’ll find one of Scotland’s most famous attractions – Loch Ness.
Head for the nearby village of Dores and make your way along a stretch of the famous waters – the loch’s perimeter is 81 miles, which would take 5-7 days to walk around!
While you search for the mythical Loch Ness Monster, don’t forget to admire the snow covered mountains that surround you.
Alternatively start your excursion in Drumnadrochit, where you’ll find the ruins of Urquhart Castle on the shores of the loch.
Snowsports for all abilities
Further south, Aviemore should definitely be on your travel bucket list. Located within the Cairngorms National Park, there are snow-capped mountains here everywhere you turn.
